CityU English Prof Shirley Lim Scholarship

Aims

The Department of English, Professor Shirley G.L. Lim Poetry Writing Scholarship is sponsored by Professor Shirley Geok-Lin Lim, University of California at Santa Barbara. It is an annual poetry writing contest that serves as a platform for undergraduate students majoring English Studies to express creatively through writing poetry in English. It also aims to stimulate the poetic potential of our undergraduates.

Objectives

  • To develop undergraduates' creativity and writing abilities
  • To enhance undergraduates' awareness and appreciation of poetry

Regulations

The following regulations shall apply as of 2023/24:

  1. The Scholarship shall be known as “City University of Hong Kong -Department of English, Professor Shirley G.L. Lim Poetry Writing Scholarship”.
     
  2. There shall be THREE award winners chosen each year from the BAEN students. The champion will receive HK$1,800 as a reward, first runner-up will receive HK$1,200 and the second runner-up will receive HK$800.
     
  3. Applicants for the awards must:
    • Be local residents of Hong Kong;
    • Be Students who are in the BAEN program;
    • Demonstrate superior creative writing ability as evidenced through the submission of one poem; and
    • Demonstrate superior spoken English as evidenced in an interview
  4. Conditions of the Scholarship:
    • The awards will be offered in the form of cash payments.
    • Scholarship winners must maintain a CGPA of at least 3.0 and must comply with all regulations of the University.
    • Winners will assist in activities (such as fiction/poetry readings, writing workshops) designed to enhance the learning culture in the Department and in fostering a creative English environment.
  5. Application Procedure:
    • Applicants must submit their application form and one poem via AIMS by 15 January, 2024.Poems will be screened and judged by our Creative Writing Course faculty in the preliminary judging stage. Finalists will be judged by Professor Shirley G.L. Lim and faculty members from the Department of English.
    • Finalists may undergo an interview to determine the extent to which their spoken English is reflective of the quality of their poems. Three winners will be chosen from among the finalists.
    • Nominations from the Department of English should reach the Student Development Services by mid-February each year and the awards shall then be made as soon as possible .

Remark:

With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Giving Club when they are in employment after graduation. This term has been incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008.
