What our alumni say

An inspiring educator

Frederick Poon
MA & BA Teaching English as a Second Language, CityUHK
Principal, St. Paul's Co-educational College

Mr Frederick Poon was inspired by his middle school teachers to devote himself to education. Having a strong interest in English, he decided to take English as an elective at City University of Hong Kong to prepare for his future as a teacher. After completing his bachelor's degree, he obtained a diploma in education and returned to CityUHK to complete his master's degree in English teaching. After coaching for many years, he has been the Principal of St. Paul's Co-educational College since 2017.

A Creative Mind

Simon Berry
MFA in Creative Writing and PhD in English Literature, CityUHK
Author of novels and short stories.

Dr Simon Berry describes himself as a recovering lawyer who is now a Hong Kong based writer of creative stories (rather than creative legal opinions). He completed a master’s degree and then a PhD in English literature at CityU HK. In addition to writing and publishing short stories, his first novel A Wasting Asset draws upon his knowledge of Hong Kong’s turbulent financial world. He is currently working on the third novel in the Daughter of the Winds young adult fantasy series and a new collection of short stories. Simon has taught creative writing at CityU for two semesters and has served as secretary of the Hong Kong Writers Circle.

Nobody is more versatile than somebody with an Arts degree — that’s what I was told just before I entered university. Four years later, I finally understood what that really means. As an English major who spent most of her undergraduate studies hunched over a computer close reading different text types and writing essays after essays after essays, I was constantly challenged to look for fresh perspectives. More importantly, all this hard work also encouraged me to find my voice and to hone the skills needed to have it heard. And without a doubt, I have our professors in the Department to thank for inspiring me to — among other things — think critically and to express myself well, especially in writing. Their teaching has been immensely helpful in realising my dream of being as a journalist.

Graduate EAPC 2023
Graduate Trainee, Construction Industry Council

Over my years at CityU EN, and especially towards the latter stages of the program, I have been exposed various courses that I find very useful in my daily work routine. My current role specializes in corporate communications, which was a major focus in EAPC’s syllabus. Therefore, I find completing daily tasks much easier than I would have otherwise, and have led to satisfactory feedback from my superiors regarding my output. After about a year’s worth of firsthand field experience, I can wholeheartedly claim that EAPC has had me well equipped with skills that would come in handy later on in life, should you be looking to start a career in the communications field.
