Bachelor of Arts in English

The Bachelor of Arts in English at City University of Hong Kong combines academically rigorous and intellectually stimulating studies with meaningful workplace experiences in order to empower students for their future lives. Graduates take up jobs as teaching and research professionals, business professionals in corporations and in the creative industries, including authors, content creators, journalists. In addition, the programme lays a strong foundation for postgraduate study. 

The programme is taught by a diverse, international group of leading scholars in the areas of literary and cultural studies, applied linguistics and language education. The programme is well known for its innovative, experiential approach to teaching and learning.

The programme structure offers a unique combination of breadth and depth of coverage. The programme core includes courses on literature, linguistics, and English for corporate and professional communication. Students then select one of two streams: 1) English and Professional Communication (EPC); and 2) Language and Literature (LLIT). Students retain flexibility and can mix and match a number of courses from the other stream if they wish.
 

Capstone Experience

In the English and Professional Communication stream, students take courses on intercultural communication, workplace communication, and corporate and professional discourse. In the language and literature stream, they study a range of advanced topics in linguistics, sociolinguistics, and critical approaches to literary and cultural studies.

The programme is well known for its innovative capstone experience that takes place in the final year of study. This capstone year provides important workplace experience with an extensive list of well-known industry partners. All students take an internship, meaning that one hundred percent of BA (English) students graduate with work experience. In addition, all students do a work-based or a research-based final year project.
