Internship

All students must complete a local or overseas internship which is a core course for English-major students regardless the stream of choice. Students can choose from a wide range of host organisations curated by the Department of English, other opportunities offered at the College or university level, or find their own host organisation upon the coordinator’s approval.

The internship course is designed to enhance and enrich students’ educational experience by integrating the academic component of their degree programme with the practical workplace experience. The course provides an opportunity for students to apply theories, practices, and skills in the workplace setting, and to critically reflect on the efficacy of the knowledge learnt in the classroom.

Some of our current partners include: corporations such as Moschino, Branding Records, Ogilvy & Mather; NGOs like EmpowerU and SPICE; and teaching institutions such as Wiseland and Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education. Additionally, upon students’ request, positions as student RA assistants are made available to students.

“As an English tutor, the internship in YCCECE has helped me understand the life of a teacher at a much deeper level. I am also very glad that I was able to apply some of the persuasion and multimodal strategies I acquired from my courses. I believe the internship has made me a more productive student with a mission to be an asset in my future career.”

JOSEPHINE CHESTERTON - SPICE Director and Founder Just Volunteers!
MAYUMI EGUCHI - SPICE Director and Trustee of Somerset Foundation

“Just Volunteers! with Chinese YMCA of HK, has been running the SPICE English Summer Programme with interns from the English Department of the City University of HK for over 6 summers. The internship involves interactive English teaching in a fun, stimulating environment for disadvantaged HK children.

We have found the quality of the City U interns to be excellent. They tend to be highly motivated and keen to reach their goals. Generally, they are self-starters who work well in teams and the English level tends to be very good. We can strongly commend their quality and their dedication!”
