Bachelor of Arts in English
The Bachelor of Arts in English at City University of Hong Kong combines academically rigorous inquiry with transformative professional experience. Our dynamic curriculum trains students to become independent thinkers and confident communicators across diverse social, cultural, and professional contexts. Our alumni thrive as educators, corporate professionals, civil servants, and creative workers, including careers as teachers, authors, content creators, digital media strategists, and journalists. Additionally, the programme provides a strong intellectual foundation for advanced postgraduate studies worldwide. Distinctive features of our programme include:
A Focused Yet Flexible Curriculum
Our undergraduate curriculum balances foundational breadth with specialised depth. All students are equipped with a robust core of knowledge in literature, linguistics, and corporate communication. From this foundation, students specialise in one of two streams, while retaining the flexibility to tailor their studies to their interests through electives from the alternate stream:
English and Professional Communication (EPC) Stream: Focuses on building skills in intercultural communication, workplace dynamics, and corporate discourse, preparing students to lead confidently in global business environments.
Language and Literature (LLIT) Stream: Focuses on topics in literature, language, creative writing, and cultural studies that immerse students in the social, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions of language and enable them to both critique and create the narratives shaping our world.
Building on these foundations, students engage in workplace experience through internships and final-year projects (see below).
Global Expertise and Real-World Experience
The curriculum is delivered by dedicated international faculty whose globally-recognized expertise spans applied linguistics, literary and cultural studies, professional communication, and language education. Our student-centered, experiential approach to teaching ensures that academic theory translates into real-world practice. Students can take advantage of a rich array of exchange opportunities at universities around the world and extend their classroom learning into a transformative global experience. Critical and Creative Learning
Our primary goal is to prepare students for a complex, interconnected world. By balancing academic theory with hands-on learning, our programme prepares students for workplaces that demand agility, critical thinking, and creative problem solving. Courses are designed to promote independent thought, foster deep analytical skills, and train students to communicate ideas with clarity, precision, and persuasive power across diverse media, cultural, and professional contexts.
Internships and Final-Year Projects
With our extensive network of industry partners, all of our students graduate with concrete workplace experience through guaranteed professional internships. A hallmark of our programme is the professional final-year capstone project, designed to link academic excellence with professional experience and to ensure our students graduate with confidence in their professional abilities and equipped with the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.
For students wanting a capstone experience that allows them to explore an academic topic in more depth and that prepares them for further studies, they can choose the Research Final Year Project, a year-long independent learning experience in which they develop their chosen topic into an original research essay under the supervision of an EN faculty member.
