Video blogs for recreational language learning
As the society is becoming more technologically advanced and diverse, the role of out-of-class language learning is becoming more visible, particularly with the involvement of digital technology. While a lot of research has been done on the use of Language MOOCs or Social Networking Sites for out-of-class language learning, this talk focuses on my work-in-progress which explores how video blogs can contribute to informal, recreational language learning, with an emphasis on the teaching of English as a foreign language. Through a comparative analysis of video blogs produced by two teachers, I demonstrate how creators of video blogs make use of multiple semiotic resources to design a desirable English learning environment to attract students from all parts of the world to join their lessons, and explore how video blogs could potentially play a more visible role in the wider language teaching and learning landscape.
