Conversation Analysis: Multimodal interaction and Second Language learning

In this talk, I will demonstrate how to analyze multimodal interaction and second language (L2) learning from a conversation analysis (CA) perspective. I will show how CA approaches multimodality by discussing my current research on placement meetings. I will show how textual objects take on locally differing categorial relevancies as textual, material, and assessable objects as the participants orient to the institutional agenda at hand, and how, reflexively, their shifting categorial relevancies are implicated in the local management of the activity. I will then talk about how CA approaches L2 learning by discussing my research on extensive reading book club. I will demonstrate how to analyze 1) learning as a visible socio-interactional practice, as opposed to hidden individual internal cognitive processes, and 2) development or learning trajectories of interactional competence over time.
